Australian Budget 2022-23: Net Migration Witness No Changes, Skilled Stream To Upsurge To 109,900

As per the latest federal budget presented in the parliament by treasurer Josh Frydenberg, there is an expected upsurge in the net overseas migration to Australia by 180,000 in 2022-23.

Keeping the focus on skilled migration, the Morrison-led government will retain over 160,000 places for the permanent migration program over the upcoming financial year. There won’t be any change in the composition, so there will be availability for one-third family streams and two-thirds skilled.

The skilled stream will upsurge to 109,900, consisting of state and territory nominated (over 20,000 places), skilled independent (more or less 16,652 places), and employer-sponsored (about 30,000 places). However, the government will keep 25,000 positions for regional visas.

It’s expected that the child and partner visa categories will offer 3,000 and 40,500 visas, respectively. For parent visa, the government will retain 6,000 places. Concerning the working holidaymakers, there will be an availability of additional 11,000 visas.

There will be a ceiling of 13,750 places like before for the humanitarian program, and an extra 16,500 places will be accessible to Afghan nationals for a period of four years. The government has taken a great initiative to make temporary visas available to all Ukraine nationals who want to escape from the Russian invasion.

According to the budget papers, there will be an estimated increase in the net overseas migration from -89,900 individuals in the pandemic period (2020-21) to 41,000 individuals in 2021-22, before increasing to 213,000 individuals in 2023-24.

The government is confident that its migration stats will be back on track after the Covid-caused decline. It expects returning overseas students along with the re-entry of over 200,000 skilled migrants a year.
