He said that Australian Citizenship is a rare privilege and should not come as a cakewalk. Applicants must meet the character, values, and language prerequisites and have lived in Australia for a minimum duration to be legitimately eligible. He further said that exceptional work and travel demands should not act as a hindrance in getting Citizenship. To counter this, the Department of Home Affairs will provide greater flexibility in applying the residence requirement of the deserving eligible individuals.

The residence concession is extended to Australian Commonwealth Games team athletes and distinguished talent visa holders.

The citizenship applicants must satisfy the general residence criteria by living in Australia on a legitimate visa for the past four years and were absent for not more than 12 months in that particular time. They also need to be a permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizens and can be absent from Australia for not more than the duration of 90 days during the 12 months before applying.

The residence requirement is implemented to the range of applicants who have gone through international travelling due to their work and Australian Nation Interest. It includes individuals such as senior business personnels, research scientists, sports persons, ship’s crew, and other distinguished artists.

The special residence requirement gives that a candidate has held a legitimate visa throughout the previous four years, living in Australia for somewhere around 480 days during that time, and probably been a permanent resident and in Australia for 120 days in the year preceding applying.
