However, there are certain limitations for international students who want to work while studying.

Working and studying in USA will depend on the type of visa you are holding. The government limits a certain amount of work activity on specific visas. For example, F1 visa holders are not allowed to accept off-campus employment at any time during the first year of their studies, while M1 visa holders are not allowed to accept any form of employment except for the purpose of temporary practical training. Exchange students who are holding a J1 visa may not accept paid employment in the USA unless it is an integral part of their programs.

There are two types of possible options for work and study in USA. The first one is known as the On-Campus employment. Here are some specifications regarding this kind of employment:

• International students are not allowed to work more than 20 hours per week except during extended holidays, breaks, and summer vacations. Students will be given the chance to work during those breaks, up to 40 hours per week.
• The U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) allows some off-campus employment, but it has to be “educationally related” and “educationally affiliated.”

The second option is the Off-Campus employment. International students who have an F1 visa are not allowed to be working and studying in USA off-campus unless the university’s designated school official allows it. It will be authorized only if the student has suffered unforeseen financial struggles.

Other off-campus work and study in USA such as working in hotels, motels, gas stations, and liquor stores are completely illegal.
